Functionality to use the R1 as hotspot

Would love to be able to use the R1 as a mobile hotspot in a pinch!

When would you use this?

From the assumption that you have a hotspot function on your phone, in my mind having a hotspot on the R1 would be practical if you’re on the move, don’t have your phone with you and want to go on-line with a tablet or laptop without cellular capability. Not a likely scenario in my situation. So I’m curious when you’d use this?

Exactly as you mention, it’s a likely scenario for me personally. When on the go, I have limited data. My tablet doesn’t have cellular and I’m in an area that doesn’t have WiFi access. I would also use the functionality for my folks who don’t have internet access.

I always have my R1 with me so why not? Other devices provide hotspots, what would be wrong with having the functionality in a pinch on my R1?

I agree that would be an absolute amazing idea would it hurt battery maybe but if it is all you have maybe pluggging it in and using at least for temp situations.

I get it that you could use the R1 in this use case, what surprises me is that, on the go, you would be carrying your R1 and tablet, but not your phone.

Not saying it’s wrong, just wondering how often it would be used given that your phone would probably do a better job as a hotspot, esp. if it has 5G.

I said in a pinch, lol. I think you’re skipping over that. So why does it matter? If you need a longer list lol here you go.

Dead phone battery.
Malfunctioning phone.
No wifi access.
Hotspot for someone that doesn’t have internet. ( yes there are ppl that don’t care about data on their phones like my folks)

I personally rarely use my phone as a hotspot. I’m on a grandfathered plan, that’s super cheap with multiple people. I’d rather not give that up when I could just add a data plan to another device I carry for cheap. Why not add a 50gb data plan for $30? If I did that on my phone plan it would be an additional $30 per line. Yes, there might be cheaper services, but they don’t work in rural areas. Hope that helps. But seriously this is just in a pinch. Doesn’t matter the cause, it’s just a nice option.

If you have a Samsung i created this routine.
When home it uses wifi.
When out of network it turns on the Hotspot automatically and the turns it off when you are back home.

I don’t have Samsung but this is a great idea! This could also be created on iPhone or iPad with shortcuts. Good looking out.
